Glamorous Glamping…
In recent years, yurts have become a popular option for glamping, or "glamorous camping."
Glamping is a trend that has emerged in response to a growing desire among travellers for more luxurious and comfortable camping experiences.
While traditional camping involves roughing it in a tent with limited amenities, glamping provides a more upscale camping experience and at Big Sky comfortable beds, beautiful sheets, hot showers, and gourmet BBQ dinners and home cooked breakfast. Add in the view of Akaroa Harbour and the dazzling night sky and there is not much more you could want.
Yurts are a portable, circular tent that have been used by nomadic people in Central Asia for centuries. While the exact origins of the yurt are not known, it is believed to have been first used by the Mongolians in the 3rd century BC. From there, it spread to other nomadic tribes in Central Asia, including the Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, and Turkmen.
The design of a yurt is well-suited to the nomadic lifestyle, as it can be easily disassembled and transported on the backs of pack animals. It is also highly adaptable to different climates, with a design that is both stable and insulated. The frame of the yurt is made from wooden poles that are bent into a circular shape and held in place with a central compression ring. The walls and roof are made from a variety of materials, including wool felt, animal hides, and more recently, canvas and vinyl.
Big Sky’s yurts were custom-made by Jaia Tipis and Yurts from Golden Bay, using a traditional, hand-crafted design. They are insulated with natural wool, and the wood used to make the yurts is grown sustainably – with none of it chemically treated.
