Akaroa…more than just a day trip
Stuff journalist Tina Law took a few days to explore Akaroa. Here is a part of her story and a link to the rest of the story.
Driving out of Christchurch on a dull, drizzly morning, is not hard, especially when I realise it’s been months since I left the city limits.
Our destination today is Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula, just 1.5 hours (or 86 kilometers) drive from Christchurch.
I’ve been to Akaroa a lot over the years. My nana grew up in the town, so there is a strong family connection to the place, but I can count on one hand how many times I’ve stayed the night. Sadly, I think it is only twice.
Akaroa, which a permanent population of just 750, is a popular day trip from Christchurch.
Many people pop over for lunch, take a walk out onto the wharf and around the waterfront, check out the shops and maybe have an ice-cream on their way home. Every once in a while they might head out on the harbour too.
But, there is so much more on offer in this quiet little town – way more than you can fit into one day. Luckily for me, this time I am staying the night.
